Obituary

M. Adeline Haaland, a reading and elementary school teacher in Excelsior, Minnetonka, Owatonna for 40 years, died of brain cancer Friday, June 24, 1994 at Presbyterian Home in Roseville, Minnesota. She was 76. She was born in Boyd, Minnesota on February 15, 1918 to parents Joseph M. and Jennie C. (Olson) Haaland. Adeline grew up in Clarkfield, Minnesota. After attending Lutheran Normal School, she began her teaching career at the age of 18. She graduated from St. Olaf College and received a Masters Degree, specializing in reading, from the University of Minnesota at Mankato State. A veteran during World War II, she served in the WAC or Women's Army Corp. Her teaching career at Minnesota schools included 25 years in Minnetonka and Excelsior, where at last she was the reading consultant at Scenic Heights in Minnetonka. In 1970, she moved to Owatonna, Minnesota, where she taught second grade for close to 10 years. After retiring from teaching, she joined her sister to run their Christian Bookstore in Owatonna. Before returning to Minnesota in late 1993, she lived in Arizona and California for 10 years, where she was active in social and missionary work with Native Americans. Throughout her life, she exhibited a love of education and care for children. A single, unmarried career woman, she and her sister adopted two daughters. In 1962, she fostered Sun Jen Yung, an infant, after her natural mother's death. In 1973, she adopted Suikja Jalali, from a Korean orphanage. Over the years, she sponsored several other foster children. She is survived by one sister, Carola Haaland, of Minneapolis; two daughters, Sun Jen Yung, of San Francisco and Suikja Jalali, of Shoreview, Minnesota, and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by parents Joseph and Jennie and brothers Donald and Waldemar.
