Michael L. Risa was born on June 22, 1879, at Rennesoy, Stayanger, Norway, the son of Ole and Maline Risa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith in his native Norway. At the age of 17 he immigrated to America and resided at Radcliffe, Iowa, where on February 25, 1911, he was united in marriage to Anna Hoversten of that community by Rev. Klungtvedt. Eight children were born to this union, all of whom survive: Amy (Mrs. John Bellamy) of Wheaton, Illinois, Olaf of Hazel Run, Thelma and Elmer on the home farm, Mildred (Mrs. John Sandstrom) of Ely, Minnesota, Helen (Mrs. Oscar E. Batdorf) of Downer's Grove, Illinois, Arlen of Clarkfield, and Ethel (Mrs. Edward Russell) of Westmont, Illinois. Following their marriage, the couple moved to a farm near Minneota, Minnesota, and shortly thereafter, to a farm south of Clarkfield. In 1916, they moved to the farm south of Hazel Run. Mrs. Risa departed this life on March 22, 1935. The family remained on the farm and there he passed away on Friday, November 13, 1964, at the age of 85 years. Through the years, Mr. Risa served in the community through the church, school district 45, the Hazel Run Elevator, Consumers Oil Company of Clarkfield, and other organizations. Mr. Risa had the opportunity of returning to his native Norway on three occasions and on the latter trip, his daughter and son, Thelma and Elmer, accompanied him. Beside the eight children, he is survived by one brother, Ole of Hanley Falls; two sisters in Norway; seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one great grandson, John Bellamy, who passed away on August 21, 1964. IN MEMORY OF M. L.
