Obituary

Melvin Reinhold Anderson, 84, of Clarkfield, Minnesota, died Wednesday, May 21, 1986, at the Clarkfield Hospital. Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, May 24, 1986, at Augustana Lutheran Church of Clarkfield, Minnesota, with Pastor Ralph B. Belin officiating. The organist was Norma Stretch. The vocal duet sung by Marge Anderson and Georgia Edmunds was "In The Garden." Congregational Hymns were "Children of the Heavenly Father" and "What A Friend We Have In Jesus." Casket Bearers were Jeffery, Laddy Jr. and Melvin G. Cusick, Norman Nelson, Alvern Johsnon and William Willander. Final Resting Place is Fridhem Cemetery, Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was born in Tyro Township in Yellow Medicine County to Gustaf and Anna (Tvedt) Anderson on July 3, 1901. He was baptized on August 11, 1901, by Rev. C. E. Shaleen and confirmed on May 13, 1915, by Rev. C. E. Sjolander in the Friedhem Church of Tyro Township. On May 31, 1935, he married Gladys Vick of Canby, Minnesota, at Adrian, Minnesota. They were married by Rev. B. P. Farness. He served on the Township Committee of the so-called Corn Hog Program, the origin of the ASCS era. He was also treasurer of the School District 29 for two years, served as supervisor on the Tyro Township Board for 12 years, was Tyro Township Clerk for nine years and served on the Augustana Church Board for 12 years. He farmed for many years on the homeplace in Tyro Township. He and wife Gladys moved to Clarkfield in the winter of 1969. He was an active member of the Clarkfield Senior Citizens, acting as treasurer for some years. He and Hallie Vik were voted Yellow Medicine County Outstanding Senior Citizens for 1972 and attended the Minnesota State Fair as special guests. He was a volunteer at the Clarkfield Care Center and a member of the Elvidal 509 Sons of Norway. In June of 1985 he and Gladys celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. He is survived by wife Gladys of Clarkfield; foster children Dale M. Anderson of Fairbanks, Alaska, Ardella Erickson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Darlene Cusick of Bemidji, Minnesota; brothers Emil of Washington, D.C. and Theodore of Willma, Minnesota; sisters Ellen Abrahamson of Charleston, West Virginia and Thilda (Mrs. Wilbur) Nelson of Cottonwood, Minnesota; plus nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Arthur, Hjalmer and Henry; sister Amelia; and foster son Jerry.
