Medchill
December 22, 1891 – June 15, 1992
Melvin Medchill was born near Fertile, Minnesota, on December 22, 1891. His parents were Ole and Julia (Christiansen) Medkil. Melvin was the sixth of ten children. He spent his first 17 years on the farm. In 1909, he went to work for the Great Northern Railroad, locating in Havre, Montana. He married Olena Tongen on June 2, 1920. In 1923, Melvin took over his father-in-law's farm in Hazel Run, Minnesota, and farmed the land until 1953. On June 28, 1970, Melvin and Olena celebrated their Golden Wedding. Melvin was very active in church and community affairs. He served as church deacon, treasurer and was active in the Men's Brotherhood. He was chairman of the Perpetual Cemetery Fund, founded in 1970. He was also county weed inspector for 15 years and Friendship Township assessor for a number of years and served as chairman of the District #28 school board. Melvin passed away June 15, 1992, at his home in San Diego, California, at the age of 100 years, 5 months and 24 days. He is survived by a son George and wife Marilyn of Oxford, Wisconsin, and daughter-in-law Laura of San Diego, California (with whom he lived the last several years), five grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Olena, a son Thomas, a grandson Jeffrey Thomas, and nine brothers and sisters.
