June 4, 1893 – May 19, 1992
Melvin Hegna was born June 4, 1893, to Albert O. and Julia Hegna in Sandnes Township, Hanley Falls. He was baptized and confirmed in Hanley Falls and attended country school. On June 8, 1922, he was united in marriage to Theoline Thompson. To this union fifteen children were born. He farmed for many years in North Dakota and Minnesota. In 1961 he retired from farming and moved to Clarkfield. In 1984 he moved to Brookside Manor in Montevideo and was a resident there for five years. Melvin then lived for a short time at the Granite Falls Manor and then entered the Madison Lutheran Home where he resided for the last two and one-half years. Melvin passed away Tuesday, May 19, 1992, at the age of 98 years, 11 months and 15 days. Melvin was King for the Montevideo Fiesta Days in 1986. He was also an active member of the Minnesota Farmers Union. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing and also attending sporting events . Melvin is survived by twin daughters Marilyn and husband Warren Johnson of Berlin, Wisconsin, Maysel and husband Earl Tweet of Conrad, Montana; son Marvin and wife Mavis of Clarkfield; son Vergil and wife Arlene of Montevideo; son Douglas and wife Dorrie of Granite Falls; son Wayne and wife Carolyn of Chaska; son David and wife Delores of Hesperia, California; daughter Janice and husband Alton Lindquist of Madison; daughter Pat and husband Wayne Myhre of Montevideo; twin daughters Kathleen and husband Bruce Marsh of Glencoe, Kathryn and husband Stan Haats of Maynard; son Larry and fiance Diane Vinge of Eden Prairie; son Melvin, Jr. (Mally) and friend Pat of Corona, California. He is also survived by 52 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Theoline in 1972; two sons Wesley and Dennis; grandson Scott Myhre; son-in-law Floyd Peterman; two great grandchildren; his parents; three brothers; and seven half-brothers and sisters. Melvin was very proud of his family and would always share his age. He was very proud of having all nine sons serve in the military. His family will always remember vwhat a "special" Dad and Grandpa he was. "Grandpa is a love you never outgrow."
