Melvin Daniel Falkum was born August 5, 1911, in rural Clarkfield, Minnesota to Thomas and Florence (Diggins) Falkum. He attended Hillside Country School #23. He helped his father and brother with the farming. On April 30, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army. He received the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged January 12, 1946. Lillian Kvistad and he were married June 6, 1946, at the Clarkfield Gospel Tabernacle. To this union two children were born, Rebekah and Timothy. Melvin worked at the Clarkfield Care Center for many years in the maintenance department. He was a charter member of the Clarkfield Assembly of God Church where he served as board member and missions secretary. He liked to work with flowers at home. Melvin passed away at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hopsital on Monday, December 14, 1992 at the age of 81. He is survived by his wife, Lillian; daughter, Rebekah Benson and her husband, Darryl of Clarkfield, Minnesota; son, Timothy Falkum and his wife Jan of Young America, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Brook and Aaron Benson and Thomas and Aimee Falkum; brother Raymond Falkum of Clarkfield, Minnesota; sisters, Gladys McLean of Clear Lake, Wisconsin, Mrs. Jesse (Ethel) Willander of Clarkfield, Minnesota and Marjorie Kvistad of Granite Falls, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews.
