Melvin Henry Berkvam was born June 16, 1909, to parents Peter H. and Nettie (Hyne) Berkvam at the farm home in Stony Run Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith at the Bergen Lutheran Church by the Rev. John J. Salhus in 1910 and confirmed at the Hazel Run Lutheran Church in 1925 by Rev. Haugland. Melvin worked with his father on the home farm until going into the Army in April of 1942. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of War Operations until his return to this country and his honorable discharge from service in November of 1945. He then worked at the Hazel Run Produce and general farm work at the Tommy Halvorson and Elmer Risa farms until about two years ago when he suffered his first heart attack. He passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Tuesday, February 3, 1970, after being taken there the previous Sunday. He leaves to mourn his departure his brother, Orten, and a number of cousins. IN MEMORY OF MELVIN H.
