Obituary

Maude Lola Combes was born August 10, 1881, at Scranton, Iowa, the daughter of John and Catherine (Bittinger) Slaughter. At the age of four her mother passed away and for many years she made her home with an uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Draper. Maude attended grade school at Odebolt, Iowa, and her high school education at Emmetsburg, Iowa. On January 14, 1903, she was united in marriage to C. Oraian Combes at Curlew, Iowa. The two made their home for a while on a farm in the southern part of Minnesota. From there they moved back to Iowa living on a farm at Cylinder, Iowa, for 34 years. It was during this time that their little daughter, Velma Lorraine came to live with them and brighten their home. Mrs. Combes was active in church work and also served in the capacity as Sunday School Superintendent. In 1939, the Combes moved to Boyd, Minnesota, where they farmed until retirement in 1947. In 1952 they moved to Clarkfield and in 1959 they entered the Clarkfield Nursing Home. Last January 14th marked their 62nd wedding anniversary. Mrs. Combes was known for her ability to give memorized readings. In spite of her sight handicap, she would quote a long reading after hearing it read to her two or three times. She remained unusually alert and entertained many up to the time of illness on various occasions. She was a faithful member of the Clarkfield Alliance Church. Mrs. Combes departed this life on Wednesday, April 28, 1965, at the age of 83 years. She will be sadly missed by her husband and her daugter, Velma Lorraine (Mrs. Arnold Hilbert) of Humboldt, Iowa; one brother, Clyde Slaughter of Tappen, North Dakota; four grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
