Mathilda Marie Selness, the daughter of Otto Albrightson, was born in Nordland, Norway, on February 5, 1881. She was baptized and confirmed at the Kvefjord Church of Nordland, Norway, by Rev. Bugge. She completed her elementary education in Nordland, Norway and immigrated to America where she took up residence with relatives in Clarkfield, Minnesota. Mathilda became acquainted with Anton A. Selness of Clarkfield and was united in marriage with him on December 27, 1900, by Rev. M.A. Sottendahl at Spring Creek Lutheran Church. To this marriage, God added his blessings of six sons and four daughters: Phillip, Alfon, Leif, Ordell, Palmer, Joseph, Lydia, Millie, Violet and Pearl. Mathilda Selness and her husband were engaged in farming south of Clarkfield until 1936 when they moved to Minneapolis. Mrs. Selness passed away June 6, 1963, at Swedish Hospital, Minneapolis, at the age of 82 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anton; her son, Joseph, and her daughter, Millie. She is survived by her sons: Phillip of Los Angeles, California, Alfon and Leif of Hopkins, Minnesota, Ordell and Palmer of Minneapolis; her three daughters: Lydia (Mrs. I Tingvold) and Violet (Mrs. Richard Carhart) of Minneapolis, and Pearl (Mrs. Timan Grosberg) of St. Paul; one brother, Jehoiakim Albrightsen of Vekeland, Norway; thirty-two grandchildren; thirty-eight great grandchildren; and one step-daughter, Mrs. Amanda Varpness of Clarkfield.
