Mathiuas Quist, son of Kolbin and Inge Kvistad was born in Gondmor, Hjorindfjord, Norway, on June 2, 1866. He immigrated to America at the age of 19 years. Mr. Quist spent his first years in and near Granite Falls. He then worked in lumber camps, lumber yards and eventually became manager of the L.P. Dolliff Lumber Yards in Echo and Clarkfield until his retirement in 1934. Mr. Quist was united in marriage to Miss Johanna Iverson of Clarkfield in 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Quist lived in Tacoma, Washington, until 1953 when they returned to Clarkfield. His health failed the last few years and on Tuesday morning, September 8, 1959, he passed away at the Clarkfield Hospital at the age of 93 years, 3 months and 6 days. His wife preceded him in death on March 13, 1954. He was an honorary life member of the Clarkfield Fire Department and also served on the village council as recorder several terms during his active years. Three brothers and one sister preceded him in death, namely, Paul Paulson, Ole Kvistad and Mrs. Edward Hustad of Echo and Jacob Kvistad in Norway.
