Mrs. Mary Westergard was born December 25, 1890, in Melvin, Illinois, the daughter of Nicholas F. and Richa (DeFries) Zitting. She came to Slayton, Minnesota, at the age of 12. She received her education at Slayton, later attending Mankato State College to become a teacher. She taught school for eight years and on November 15, 1916, she was united in marriage to Chris H. Westergard of Pipestone, Minnesota. They farmed in Lake County, South Dakota, for 40 years and in 1956 retired to the family home in Slayton. Mrs. Westergard passed away April 2, 1966, at the Granite Falls Hospital, at the age of 75 years. She had been living with her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Husby at Clarkfield, Minnesota, since her husband's death in November, 1962. Mrs. Mary Westergard was preceded in death by her husband, Chris. She is survived by one son, Richard, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; three daughters: Ethel (Mrs. Lloyd Westre) of Boyd, Minnesota, Laura (Mrs. Kenneth Vogt) of Watertown, South Dakota, and Lyle (Mrs. Arthur Husby) of Clarkfield, Minnesota. Also surviving are two sisters: Mrs. Arthur Stevens and Miss Annette Zitting, all of Slayton, besides her six grandsons and one granddaughter. IN MEMORY OF MRS. MARY F.
