Mary Ileen (Hohn) Schmitt November 27, 1937 ~ February 4, 2015 Mary Ileen (Hohn) Schmitt was born on November 27, 1937, in Yankton, South Dakota, to parents Joseph and Ileen Hohn. She was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Yankton. She graduated from Mount Marty High School in 1955. Mary attended Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, Iowa, and South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology. John and Mary were united in marriage on September 4, 1961. To this union five children were born: Bill, Margaret, Mike, Kathy and Tom. They moved to Clarkfield in 1967 where John taught school for 30 years and Mary worked at the Clarkfield Care Center for 21 years as a Nursing Assistant. Mary was an active member at St. Isidore's parish in Clarkfield and later at St. Joseph's church in Montevideo. After retirement, she volunteered at the food shelf, blood mobile, hospice and was an active member of the Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards with her Senior Citizens, watching sports and having a cup of coffee with her friends. Mary passed away on Wednesday afternoon, February 4, 2015, at the Clarkfield Care Center at the age of 77, with her children at her bedside. She is survived by her children: Bill of Norwalk, Wisconsin, Margaret of Maplewood, Minnesota, Mike (Chris) of Milroy, Minnesota, Kathy (Jerry) Kaupang of Clarkfield and Tom (Betsy) of Porter, Minnesota; grandchildren: Jacob, Megan, John, Nicholas Schmitt, Michelle and Corina Kaupang, Leah and Grant Schmitt and great granddaughter, Alayna. Also surviving are brothers: Jim Hohn of Yankton, South Dakota, John (Melinda) Hohn of South Port, North Carolina; sisters-in-law: Kay Helwig of Annadale, Minnesota, Carol (Gary) Nelson of Aberdeen, South Dakota; and her nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John; parents, Joseph and Ileen Hohn and grandson, Branden Schmitt. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She will be greatly missed. Blessed be her memory.
