Martha Sofia Aakvik, 85, died at the Chippewa County Montvideo Hospital, Montevideo, Minnesota, on Sunday, December 21, 1986. Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 23, 1986, at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church with Pastor Gordon A. Trelstad officiating. Organist was Karen Donner with vocal music by Belinda Field. Congregational Hymns were "The Church's One Foundation" and "Silent Night." Final Resting Place is the Clarkfield Lutheran Cemetery, Clarkfield, Minnesota. Casket Bearers were Thomas, Steven, Jeffrey, Edward Brusven, Charles and Roger Vien. She was born October 18, 1901, to Roe and Anna (Helgeson) Hatlen. She was born second in a family of 12 children. She was baptized in Israel Lutheran Church by Rev. J. S. Strand and confirmed in St. Lucas Lutheran Church of rural Cottonwood, Minnesota, on May 15, 1915. She attended country schools both in Normania Township and District 99 in Swede Prarie Township. At an early age she did housework in various homes. On February 24, 1921, she was married to Elmer Aakvik by Rev. O.M. Wee, to which two daughters were born; Marie was born July 13, 1923, and died one week later, Dorothy was born in 1925 and later married Anton Brusven. A nephew, Arthur Aakvik lived with them for 12 years. Martha took care of her husband's aged parents in her home for many years. She has been "second mother" to many people. Quilting was her favorite hobby. She was a member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church where she was an active member of the Ladies Aid. She had been a resident of the Clarkfield Care Center for the past four and one-half months. She is survived by her daughter, Dorothy and husband Anton Brusven of Clarkfield; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; sisters, Annie (Mrs. Elmer) Reinke of Garrison, Minnesota, Norma (Mrs. Roy) Hilgert of Bird Island, Minnesota, Ida (Mrs. Leslie) Vien of Clarkfield and Betty (Mrs. Harold) Liljequist of Golden Valley, Minnesota; brothers, Knute and wife Hilda of Libby, Montana, and Robert of Kalispell, Montana; plus many nieces and nephews.
