IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marion Henrietta
(Anderson) Gustafson
April 20, 1908 – April 20, 1908
Marion Henrietta (Anderson) Gustafson was born on April 20, 1908, to Anders and Hannah (Moen) Anderson. Their farm was in Camp Release Township of Lac qui Parle County near Montevideo, Minnesota. She often talked of the memories she had growing up on the farm with her younger sister, Agnes and younger brothers Clifford and Gordon. Marion would reminisce of her experiences at Country School and of the friends she made there. She attended high school in Montevideo and graduated from there in 1926. After graduating she attended Humbolt College in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for a secretarial course and upon graduating took a job with a plumbing company in Minneapolis as bookkeeper. During the depression, Marion moved back to Montevideo and worked as a hired girl. In 1934 she began working as a hired girl for the Gustafson family on a farm three miles north of Hanley Falls, Minnesota. It was there that she met Herbert Gustafson, who was one of the Gustafson sons. They were married on March 16, 1935, and started their life together on the home Gustafson farm. During the coming years they had four children: Arlan, Eileen, Joyce, and Diane. Herbert's life was cut short when he suffered a heart attack and died in 1947. At that time Marion's brother Gordon moved to the farm and began farming the land which enabled her to stay on the farm with her family. When Marion was asked how she handled being left a widow at such a young age, she responded that she had no choice, she had four children to raise. Marion continued living on the farm until 1967 when she moved to Hanley Falls. She lived there until May 2000 when she moved to Riverview Apartments in Granite Falls, Minnesota. In June 2005 she moved to Luther Haven in Montevideo. Marion's life revolved around her family and friends. She has been an active member of Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church in Hanley Falls. She was very involved in a number of church and community organizations. She especially enjoyed her Birthday Club, which she was a member of for over 50 years, and her Senior Citizen group.
