Marie Hegni was born June 24, 1864, in Nordfjord, Norway, the daughter of Lars and Marie Eikeness. She immigrated to America in 1892, settling down in the Clarkfield community. In February of 1895 she married Mr. Halvor T. Hegni, also of the Clarkfield community, and moved to the farm three miles south of Clarkfield, where she spent the remainder of her life. Mrs. Hegni was a quiet-spoken, retiring person, but was always willing and ready to help with church work or any good community project. She became a member of the Clarkfield Norwegian Lutheran Church more than half a century ago, always taking an active part in ladies aid work and congregational activities in general. Losing her helpmate while the children were still very young, this tiny woman shouldered the responsibilities of raising five children and operating a farm at a time when farming was not very profitable. She succeeded in a remarkable manner, with the help of the children. Born to the Hegni union were six children, Theodore, who died March 14, 1953, Lewis and Halvor at home, another son, Halvor, who died in infancy, Mabel (Mrs. Maurice Brecke) of Montevideo, Minnesota, and Joseph of Minneapolis who mourn the passing of a well-loved mother. There are also a number of grandchildren and other relatives. Mrs. Hegni passed away May 11, 1953, at her Friendship Township home, at the age of 88 years.
