IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maren (Christianson)
Hellzen
November 27, 1859 – November 27, 1859
Maren Hellzen was born in Norway, the daughter of Christian and Karne Mortensen on November 27, 1859. She was baptized in December the same year. Her mother died when she was three years old and thereafter she made her home with an uncle, H.P. Ringsby. In 1867 Maren came to America with the Ringsbys, settling in Goodhue County, Minnesota. Later they moved to Chippewa County where she lived until she married C.A. Hellzen in June, 1889. The young couple settled on a farm in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, among the first settlers in the area to the southwest of Clarkfield. Mrs. Hellzen made her home there until 1945. Since then she has lived with her daughters. Mrs. Hellzen had enjoyed unusually good health until December 3rd, 1951, when she suffered a paralytic stroke. She passed peacefully away at the Clarkfield Community Hospital at the age of 92 years and 21 days. Surviving are four daughters: Ovidia (Mrs. Larson) of Canby, Agnes (Mrs. Oscar Peterson), Helen (Mrs. Peter Rodseth) and Hanna, all of Clarkfield. Her husband and two sons preceded her in death. She was known as a "faithful and goodhearted woman--no traveler ever went hungry from her door." She will be greatly missed by her family.
