Marcella Handeland was born on February 10, 1950, at the Clarkfield Hospital, Clarkfield, Minnesota, to parents Marvin and Pernilla (Kompelien) Anderson. She was baptized at the Hazel Run Lutheran Church, Hazel Run, Minnesota, on March 26, 1950, and confirmed on May 9, 1965, at Hazel Run Lutheran Church. "Marcie" graduated from Clarkfield High School in 1968 and from Southwest State University, Marshall, Minnesota, in 1972. Marcie and Byron J. Handeland were married on August 5, 1972, at the Hazel Run Lutheran Church. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Melissa, Gregory, and Melanie. Marcie taught Kindergarten in Boyd, Minnesota, for five years. She also owned and operated 'Hande's Drive-In' in Clarkfield. She was a G.E.D. teacher for several years, Early Childhood Teacher at SWMN Technical College and most recently was a 'Reading Recovery Teacher' at YME School in Clarkfield. She was an active member of Clarkfield Lutheran Church, WELCA, Hazel Run Legion Auxiliary, CLC Sunday School Teacher, Friendship and Friends Homemakers, and Fair Weather Investment Club. Marcie enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She was always ready and willing to help others. A favorite way for her to relax was going to the lake and fishing. In her spare time, she enjoyed quilting, crafts, stained glass, garage sales, and bargain hunting. Marcie passed away early Wednesday morning, December 29, 1999, at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital, Montevideo, Minnesota, following a courageous battle with cancer. She had reached the age of 49 years, 10 months, and 19 days. She is survived by her husband Byron and children: Melissa of St. Cloud, Minnesota, Gregory a student at Mankato Technical College, Mankato, Minnesota, and Melanie, 17, a student at YME High School. She also is survived by her parents, Marvin and Pernilla Anderson of Clarkfield; and mother-in-law Betty Handeland of Clarkfield; brother Ron (and Doris) Anderson of Aberdeen, South Dakota; sister Pam (and Jim) Williams of Clarkfield; brother Maurice (and Sheryl) Anderson of Clarkfield; plus extended family and many, many friends. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Thorvald and Petra Kompelien, Gilbert and Mathilda Anderson, and father-in-law: Kenneth Handeland, Sr. Marcie was a vibrant, loving, and generous person. A loving and devoted wife, mother, and daughter. A gracious and caring friend and sister. Marcie was known affectionately as "Auntie" by her nieces and nephews. Marcie will be missed and always loved. Blessed be her memory.
