Obituary

Malon Vagle, 98, died February 25, 1988 at the Clarkfield Care Center, Clarkfield, Minnesota. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 1, 1988, 2:00 p.m. from the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church, Hanley Falls, Minnesota, with Pastor Larry Olson officiating. Organist was Colleen Hewitt, soloist was Mavis Ellingson and additional vocal music by the Harmonettes. Casket Bearers were Melvin Aakvik, Arlen Martin, Galen Redetzke, James Rowberg, Clayton Stevens and Harold Zimmerman. Military rites were by the Hanley Falls American Legion Post No. 127. Final Resting Place is East Yellow Medicine Lutheran Cemetery, Hanley Falls, Minnesota. Malon was born August 3, 1889, at Hanley Falls to John and Martha (Haaland) Vagle and baptized and confirmed at the Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church of Hanley Falls where he was a lifetime member. He attended school at Hanley Falls and served his country in WWI. He entered service on May 28, 1918 at Granite Falls and was discharged from Camp Dodge, Iowa, on April 18, 1919. Malon had over 55 years of active Masonic membership, starting with Florence Lodge 216 of Wood Lake and Hanley Falls then the Granite Lodge 117 and on to Montevideo Sunset Lodge No. 109. On January 7, 1921, he was married to Bessie Holum at Yellow Medicine Lutheran Church by Rev. Ole Lokensgaard. Bessie died February 23, 1966. He worked with his father on the Dray Line and also with the railroad crew. He worked as school janitor for many years and also served as church janitor. He was active in Post No. 127 American Legion Post of Hanley Falls. For many years one of his duties was to present the American flag to a veteran's survivor at the cemetery service. He was a life time member. Malon enjoyed being a part of the Whist Club of Hanley Falls. He is survived by one sister, Delia Olson now of the Clarkfield Care Center and nieces and nephews. He will be remembered for his "History of Hanley Falls" booklet. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters.
