Martin Leonard Peterson was born on July 9, 1903, to Nicolai Njolstad Peterson and Gustava (Lende) Peterson in Friendship Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was baptized by Pastor Salhus and confirmed by Pastor Storaasli. He attended country school and in the Cottonwood School. He was engaged in construction work in the east and in Chicago for several years, and duriing World War II he went to Pearl Harbor Navy Yard and did construction for four years. He married Camilla Jacobson on January 30, 1946. They farmed in Friendship Township until 1968 when they moved to Clarkfield. Leonard passed away at the Clarkfield Care Center on Sunday, August 18, 1979, at the age of 68 years. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters: Christine Ree, Grethe Paul, Ella Berdeen and Ruth Jacobson. Surviving are his wife, Camilla; children: Karen (and Art) Jensen of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Wayne Peterson of Minneapolis; two grandchildren, Christine and Bob Jensen; two brothers: Oscar at the Clarkfield Care Center and George of Laguna Hills, California; and four sisters: Nora Mossige of Cottonwood, Minnesota, Nettie Waite of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Sylvia Miller of Clarkfield, and Bergliot Larson of Eveleth, Minnesota.
