Lyle John Barkelew, son of Edward and Allie (Akred) Barkelew, was born February 15, 1909, in Hazel Run Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. On April 24, 1970, he suffered a heart attack from which he never fully recovered. He passed away suddenly at his farm home in Stony Run Township of Yellow Medicine County, on Saturday, August 15, 1970, at 3 p.m., at the age of sixty-one years. At an early age, he moved with his parents to a farm in Stony Run Township which was his home for the remainder of his life. On June 5, 1946, he was united in marriage to Iona Nelson of Clarkfield, Minnesota. To this union was born one daughter, Lila Ione, who died in infancy. Lyle was baptized at the Congregational Church of Granite Falls and later became a member of Augustana Lutheran Church of Clarkfield. He had been a member of the Montevideo Odd Fellow Lodge for the past twenty-six years and was active in local and civic organizations. Lyle was preceded in death by his daughter, Lila Ione; his parents; and one sister who died in infancy. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Iona; a brother-in-law and wife; a sister-in-law and husband; nieces and nephews; several cousins and a host of friends and neighbors. He was a kind, loving and considerate husband, friend and neighbor, always willing and ready to help anyone in need. Among those who love him is a host of children for whom he had a deep love.
