Carlton Varpness, 78, died at the Weiner Memorial Nursing Home, Marshall, Minnesota, February 5, 1988. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 9, 1988, 11:00 a.m. from the St. Lucas Lutheran Church of Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, with Pastor John Christiansen officiating. Organist was Mrs. Diane Gregoire and vocal music by Pastor Christianson. Honorary Casket Bearers were Erling Albin, John Anderson, Henry Halvorson, Orville Kompelien, Thurman Kompelien and Arnold Weise. Active Casket Bearers were Mark Johnson, David Sampson, Duane, David, Dennis and Douglas Tongen. Final Resting Place is St. Lucas Lutheran Church Cemetery, Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. Carlton was born September 5, 1909, to Oluf and Oline Varpness in Normania Township. He was baptized September 19, 1909 by Rev. T. H. Haugen and confirmed May 25, 1924 by Rev. N. L. Otterstad in St. Lucas Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member. He attended school in Normania Township, District No. 2. Carlton enjoyed farming on his home farm all his working life. He was a supervisor on the Normania Township Board for many years and also served on the St. Lucas Cemetery Board. His leisure time was spent golfing and bowling and he also enjoyed being a member of the Sons of Norway. He was survived by his nieces Mrs. Melvin (Ordis) Cakebread of Bloomington, Minnesota, Mrs. Leon (Ella) Kasper of Edina, Minnesota, Mrs. Omar (Hazel) Tongen of rural Boyd, Minnesota, Mrs. Warren (Ethel) Johnson of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Mrs. Gerald (Doris) Coash of Bloomington; many nieces and nephews; grand nieces and nephews; cousins; friends and neighbors.
