Lucius Tongen passed away suddenly on Monday, August 18, 2008, at the Granite Falls Hospital, Granite Falls, Minnesota, at the age of 91. Lucius was born August 1, 1917, to parents Jim and Inez (Isaacs) Tongen in Hazel Run, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Hazel Run Lutheran Church and went to school in Hazel Run. After finishing school he worked on many farms doing field work, chores, threshing and filling silo. In 1939, while working for Alfred Stenson, he met his life long partner Evelyn Stenson. They were united in marriage on April 7, 1940, at Bergen Lutheran Church. Together they lived and farmed in Lisbon Township of Yellow Medicine County for nearly 60 years. In 1961 their son Wayne came into their lives and completed their Loving Family. Over the years Lucius was very active in the Bergen Church serving as a trustee and a deacon. He was an active member of the Farmers Union, Lisbon Township and was on the Clarkfield Elevator Board for over 25 years. Lucius remained living on the farm until 2006 at which time he moved to the Valhalla Apartments in Clarkfield, Minnesota, a place he enjoyed very much. Lucius loved life; he truly enjoyed his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved to have a cup of coffee, lunch and visit with everyone. He loved watching the Twins, the Vikings and the Timberwolves. And most of all he enjoyed playing pinochle with his friends. (He played for over 80 years). He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Pat Virkus, of Clarkfield; two grandsons and their families, Dustin, Jeni and Rhianna of Clarkfield and Derek, Jody, Thomas and Tallie of Hastings, Minnesota; two brothers, Omar (and Hazel) Tongen of Clarkfield and Harlan (and Bernetta) Tongen of Hopkins, Minnesota; and sister-in-law Laura Tongen of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Inez; his Loving wife Evie; and two brothers, Willard and Jerald.
