Lloyd Howard Nelson was born to Mabel and Adolph Nelson on September 13, 1917 in Hazel Run, MN. The family moved to Clarkfield, MN, where he attended elementary and high school, graduating in 1936. Shortly after graduation he signed up with the National Guard in Dawson, MN. In November, 1941 he was called up to active duty with the Minnesota National Guard, part of the 34th Division called "The Red Bull" Division. The 34th Division was sent to Camp Claiborne, LA, and five weeks after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, they left for Fort Dix, NJ. From there the 34th Division was sent to Europe. Starting in November, 1942, the 135th Infantry saw heavy fighting in the taking of North Africa. Lloyd was wounded during action in North Africa and was hospitalized there. Because of his injury he was transferred from the infantry to serve in the military police and was stationed in Naples, Italy. While on furlough in the states, Lloyd married Lucille Mikelson on November 25, 1944. Shortly after the wedding Lloyd was sent back to Europe, where he remained until the war ended in 1945. In June of the following year, a son, Richard Lloyd, was born. Lloyd was employed by the John Morrell Meat Company for 23 years before retiring in 1976. Following his retirement Lloyd and Lucille built a home on Lake Inquadona near Longville, MN. They moved to Alexandria, MN in 1985. In October, 1998 they moved back to their hometown of Clarkfield, MN. Lloyd passed away on December 31, 1998 at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital.
