Lionel "Stretch" Hartfiel was born March 30, 1919, in Sleepy Eye, Minnesota, to Theodore and Hulda (Galow) Hartfiel. He was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church, Tyro Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He graduated from Boyd High School. After high school Lionel attended Gustavus Adolphus College. On October 1941 he entered the Army and served his country in New Guinea. He was honorably discharged in September of 1945. Stretch married Alyce Quaal of Boyd in 1946. He owned and operated the Hartfiel Oil Co. with his father, T.W. He retired from this business in 1973. He was a very active member in the Trinity Lutheran Church, and a volunteer with the Boyd Fire Dept. He had many loves in his life besides his family. One of them was his love of fishing, never catching anything just loving the sport. He loved to travel, camp and enjoyed going to Trailways Cafe for coffee with his buddies. Stretch's pride and joy was his 1972 GMC pickup. After the death of his wife he went to work for the Dawson Mills, Dawson, Minnesota, as a truck driver. He worked for the Mill for 10 years. In 1977 he married Evelyn Edwards of Montevideo, Minnesota. They made their home in rural Montevideo. He passed away on Saturday, December 8, 2001, at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital, Montevideo, Minnesota, at the age of 82 years. He is survived by his wife Evelyn, two daughters: Donna Hartfiel of Olympia, Washington, Bonnie (Ronald) Kopitzke of Clarkfield, Minnesota; five stepchildren: Pamela Johansen of Montevideo, Scott (Marty) Edwards of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Susan Monson of Cuba City, Wisconsin, Laurie Pederson of Maynard, Minnesota, and Jeffrey (Ellie) Edwards of Cincinnati, Ohio; two grandsons: Mark (Mandy) Koptizke of Clarkfield, Mike Kopitzke of Alexandria, Minnesota; ten step-grandchildren; and one great grandson He was preceded in death by his wife Alyce, parents, one sister and a step granddaughter.
