Mrs. Lilly Smithwick, who passed away at the local hospital at Clarkfield, Minnesota, early Sunday morning, July 27, 1975, was laid to rest at the Calvary Cemetery at Morris, Minnesota, on Wednesday afternoon following the last rites at the Church of the Assumption in that city. She was born February 8, 1890, at Fairfax, Minnesota, the sixth in the family of eight children of Herman A. and Wilhelmina A. (Kringel) Jaenisch. At the age of three, the family moved to Clara City, Minnesota, and at the age of six to Johnson, Minnesota. There she learned the hotel- restaurant business as the family operated a hotel in the railroad days. On May 18, 1910, she was united in marriage to Thomas E. Smithwick, a longtime highway maintenance worker in the days of horse-drawn equipment. He died January 15, 1952. She assisted in the care of her aging parents and upon their death, moved to Morris in 1932 where she had since resided with the exception of a few brief war-years when she cooked in hospitals and schools on the west coast. She operated a restaurant in Morris a number of years and also clerked. She was a sister of the late Mrs. Edward Elmer of Cottonwood and an aunt of Alfred Elmer and Mrs. Erling (Millie) Jurgenson of this community with whom she was residing and had frequently visited through the years. She entered the local hospital on July 8, 1975.
