Leonard John Johnson was born November 7, 1902, to John and Mary (Winson) Johnson at Canoca, South Dakota. His father passed away in 1903. He and his mother moved to Clarkfield. In 1906, his mother married Hans Oakland. They settled on a farm west of Clarkfield and resided there until 1912 when they moved to Montevideo where he grew to manhood. He was baptized and confirmed at Camp Release Church, Stony Run Township, by Rev. Ludwig Pederson. On February 27, 1927, he was united in marriage to Hannah Lindquist at his parents' home in Montevideo by Rev. Lee. To this union, two children were born. They farmed until 1940 when they moved to Clarkfield. He worked for Swift & Company in Montevideo for two years and two years for the Farmers Elevator. For 20 years he drove a gas transport for Consumers Co-op. He retired at the age of 64 and since then has been operating a lawn mower repair shop. He passed away May 19, 1969, at 6:45 p.m. at the age of 66 years at the Montevideo Hospital following surgery. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and his stepfather, Hans Oakland. He is survived by his wife, Hannah; son, Roger, of San Antonio, Texas; daughter, Betty (Mrs. Murlon Knutson) of Dawson; two sisters: Harriet Wig of Montevideo, and Delores (Mrs. Robert Schramm) of South Milwaukee; a brother, Waldo Oakland of St. Cloud; and seven grandchildren.
