Leo John Schmitz was born March 3, 1935 to parents John P. and Delia (Oman) Schmitz at their home in Southbrook Township, Cottonwood County, Minnesota. He was baptized at St. Mary's Church, Dundee, MN on March 10, 1935. Leo lived near Dundee with his parents. Leo married Wilma M. Jenkins on April 10, 1954 at Worthington, MN. Leo and Wilma were blessed with six boys: Kenny Lynn, James Wayne, Ronald Wesley, Robert John, Leo John Jr., and Arthur Thomas. Leo and Wilma lived near Org, Minnesota until 1961 when he begin working for Orville Mork Hardware as a digger operator. He then worked for Leon Aasen Construction. In 1970 the family moved to Boyd and Leo worked with his father at the Boyd Auto Crushing. He also worked for Norman Improvement as an equipment operator and for the last 16 years has been employed at AMPI of Dawson. Leo passed away at his home on Sunday evening, March 24, 1996 at the age of 61 years, and 21 days. He is survived by his wife, Wilma, of Boyd and his children: Kenny (and Dorene) of Big Bend, James (and Linda) of Montevideo, Ronald (and friend Karen Johnson of Raymond) of Clarkfield, Robert (and Mona) of Springfield, Leo (and Brenda) of Royalton, and Art (and Natalie) of Boyd. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, his mother, Delia, of Boyd, two brothers: Donald (and Susie) Schmitz and LeRoy (and Darlene) Schmitz and three sisters: Marcella Carey, Deloris (and friend Ken) Barger and Lillian (and Gary) Bue, and sister-in-law Mary Schmitz. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Leo was preceded in death by his father, John, brother Melvin, mother-in-law Marjorie Sorenson and husband Leroy and brother-in-law Jesse Carey. Leo loved his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them. He also enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He will be missed by many.
