Leo O. Flattum October 28, 1940 ~ January 31, 2014 Leo Orlando Flattum was born in Webster, South Dakota, to Agnes (Jordanger) and Bert Flattum on October 28th, 1940. He was baptized and confirmed at Butler Lutheran Church in Butler, South Dakota. Leo worked at Stone Hill Creamery, later purchased by what was to become AMPI. He was transferred to Clarkfield in 1960. Leo retired in 2002 after 43 years of working in the creamery business and cheese plant. Leo married Marcia Friberg on August 8, 1964, and to this union two sons and a daughter were born. Marcia and Leo owned the Corner Store in Clarkfield for many years. He took his civic responsibilities very seriously and remained involved as mayor, with his career beginning in 1974 and ending in 1998, and also as a councilman from 2002-2006. He was on the Valhalla Board, Hospital Board, EDA and C&C of Clarkfield. He was also involved with the Republican Party and many other boards. He was instrumental in the addition to the Clarkfield Care Center and was deeply involved in recovery challenges in the aftermath of the tornado in 1992. Leo passed away January 31st, 2014, at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital with his family at his side. Leo was 73 years, 3 months and 3 days old. He is survived by his wife, Marcia; son, Joel (Kim) Flattum and their children, Tyler and Justine; son, Jason (Colleen) Flattum and their children, Nicholas and Claire; daughter, Jana (Adam) Suckow; and brother LeRoy (Mavis) Flattum and son Kyle. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Carol (Wes) Seyller and Susan Gotchie and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and also his brother-in-law Pat Gotchie.
