Leland Eugene McCoy was born March 30, 1920 at Kansas, Illinois to parents Orph and Era (Lown) McCoy. He was baptized in the Methodist faith. Leland attended school in Terrel, Iowa and graduated with the Class of 1938. Leland entered the United States Army on July 9, 1945 at Fort Snelling and served his country until he was discharged at Mitchel Field, New York on December 10, 1946. Leland married Audrey Elaine Winson on July 26, 1947 at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. They lived and farmed near Clarkfield and owned and operated the Clarkfield Farm Chemical Company. Leland suffered a stroke in 1980. He has been a resident of the Clarkfield Care Center for the past 15 years. Leland passed away on Friday, October 18, 1996 at the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital at the age of 76 years, 6 months, and 19 days. Leland was a member of the Civic and Commerce Association, the American Legion, and the Masons. He loved to garden, hunt, and spend time at the lake fishing. He is survived by his three sons: Leland, Jr. (Mickey), Patrick (and Joyce) all of Clarkfield, and Kenneth of Aspen, Colorado. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and two brothers: Delbert (and Carol) of Storm Lake, lowa, Duane (and Dorothy) of Clarkfield, and four sisters: Marie Cushman of Watson, Lucille (and Frank) Rose of Spencer, Iowa, Colleen (and Roger) Olson of Wood Lake, Judy (and Andy) Vandorp of Fargo, ND, and sister-in-law Shirley Saue of Clarkfield. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Leland was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Audrey, brothers Kenneth and Dale, and brother-in-law Darrel Cushman.
