Lawrence A. Cliffgard was born in Cottonwood, Minnesota, on January 10, 1900, to parents Jim and Anna (Nelson) Cliffgard. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He was a member of the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. He attended school in rural Hanley Falls, Waseca and Clarkfield, Minnesota. He came to Clarkfield in 1924 when he started the restaurant business with his widowed mother. She died in 1937. On August 19, 1951, he was united in marriage to Alice Hagan of Clarkfield. The two continued the cafe business in the place now occupied by Lund's Jewelry until May 30, 1957. After a year or so, and being an active person, he started painting with Nefton Nelson, which he continued until about two and a half years ago when his health began to fail. "Cliff" passed away on Friday, June 11, 1971, at the Clarkfield Community Hospital, at the age of 71 years. Death was due to leukemia. He was preceded in death by his father and mother; brother, Louis; and sister, Thea. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife, Alice; his sister, Mabel (Mrs. Adolph Nelson); and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. IN MEMORY OF Lawrence A.
