Larry Stokke, Clarkfield High School graduate with the class of 1966 passed away on Thursday, January 13, 1972, at the Meeker County Hospital in Litchfield, Minnesota, following injuries sustained the previous evening in a highway accident. He was 23 years old. Larry, in company with DuWayne Lehmann of Boyd, Minnesota, had stopped their car at the intersection on Highway 7 near Cosmos about 1:30 a.m. to exchange drivers. In the process, the car stalled and in the attempt to flag down a truck for aid, the accident occurred. Wednesday evening the weather was threatening with heavy winds and drifting snow. Larry was born in Minnesota, May 23, 1948, the son of Olai and Gladys (Kirschbaum) Stokke. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith and was confirmed at the Clarkfield Lutheran Church. He attended the Granite Falls Vocational School for one year. He served in the Armed Forces for three years, including one year in Viet Nam where he was a helicopter door gunner and a crew chief. His company received a citation from the President of the United States and the South Vietnamese government for continued dangerous activity in combat duty. Larry was also awarded the bronze star and the air medal for meritorius service. Larry was preceded in death by his mother, his maternal grandmother, Mrs. E.O. Kirschbaum and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Olai Stokke. He is survived by his father, Carl Stokke of Granite Falls, Minnesota, and one sister, Karla (Mrs. Richard VanMoorlehem) of Morris, Minnesota, and a number of relatives and friends.
