Obituary

Konrad K. Solberg was born at Rushford, Minnesota, on June 25, 1874. At the age of five, he moved with his parents Knute and Aasild (Haugen) Solberg to Lisbon Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, where he resided the greater part of his life. They were members of Bergen Lutheran Church, where he was confirmed. On June 9, 1897, he was united in marriage to Sophie Swenson Aas of Clarkfield by Rev. W.B. Dahl. To this union nine children were born. Mr. Solberg was engaged in the mercantile business in Clarkfield for many years. He was instrumental in the organization of several co-operatives in this community, namely the Creamery Association, the Farmers Elevator and the Consumers Co-op Oil Company. He joined the Norwegian Lutheran Church as soon as he moved to town and took an active interest in church work. For 29 years he was superintendent of the Sunday School and for eighteen years served as treasurer of the congregation. Mr. Solberg held the position of State Senator from 1923 until 1931. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1932. During the Depression when the bank closings came, he was acting Governor of the State for a short time, while Gov. Floyd Olson went to Washington D.C. Mr. Solberg was a man of strong convictions, of much determination willing to stand boldly for the principles in which he believed. He found much joy and satisfaction in serving his fellow man. He was active and well for a man of his age, but death came unexpectedly Thursday afternoon, January 28, 1954, at home at the age of 79 years and seven months. Preceding him in death were his wife, Sophie, who passed away April, 1953; four children: Arthur, Selma, Kenneth and Reuben; his parents; three sisters: Rena, Belle and Susie; and one brother, Haldor. Surviving him are two sons, Oliver of Clarkfield, Mirl of Minneapolis; three daughters: Amy (Mrs. Jerome Slatta) of Upham, North Dakota, Eleanor (Mrs. Radcliffe Caswell) of Lomita, California, and Arda (Mrs. Fred Psyhos, Jr.) of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren and one brother, Rev.
