Born in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, on August 1, 1915, to Knute and Annie "Imo" (Homan) Haugen, Kermit was baptized and confirmed at Bergen Lutheran Church. He farmed until entering the Army in May, 1942. He served with the 743rd Tank Battalion in numerous major European battles. He returned to farming in October, 1945. Kermit met Elizabeth F. (Simons) in Montevideo, Minnesota, while he was in uniform and waiting to be shipped out during World War II. Kermit and Liz kept corresponding while he was in the service. They were married at Trinity Methodist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1946. Following their marriage, they made their home in the Clarkfield-Hazel Run area.They resided on the farm until his illness. Kermit passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Minneapolis, at the age of 64 years. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth; his mother of Granite Falls, Minnesota; one sister, Gladys (Mrs. Darold F. Doose) of Granite Falls, Minnesota; three brothers: Glenn of Minneapolis, Harold of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Orrin of Clarkfield, Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father.
