Kathryn Elsom was born in Sheldon, Iowa, on December 26, 1901, the twelfth child of Jerena Moerke and husband Diedrich Luikens of the Netherlands. The family moved to Minnesota where Kathryn graduated from High School in Herman, Minnesota. Kathryn attended two summer sessions at Moorhead State for teacher's training. She taught in rural schools until her marriage on January 30, 1924, to Emerald Elsom of Britton, South Dakota. The Elsom's made their home in Britton where she worked in several different offices, including clerking at the local Livestock Sales Pavilion for several years. She was a member of the Methodist Church and Women's Society, the Rebekah Lodge, Past Noble Grands Club, Legion Auxiliary, and Pleasant Valley Sunshine Society. Mr. Elsom passed away in November of 1974 and Kathryn moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, in March of 1975 and lived at Valhalla Apartments until entering the Clarkfield Care Center in January of 1995. She enjoyed playing cards, visiting, traveling, and doing fancy work of all kinds. She crocheted many doilies, tablecloths, afghans, etc. Kathryn passed away at the Care Center on Tuesday, September 14, 2004, at the age of 102 years, 8 months and 19 days. She is survived by her daughter Arlene and husband James Lynner of Clarkfield and son George Elsom and wife Denice of Las Vegas, Nevada. She is also survived by five grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband and 11 siblings.
