Obituary

Kalmer Norman Skaalen was born December 15, 1915, one of seven children of Knute and Christine Skaalen. He spent his youth delivering newspapers, working for the Red & White Store, playing baseball and caddying at the old Boyd golf club. A few years after graduating from Boyd High School, Boyd Minnesota, he purchased the store and competed with two other groceries in town until selling the business in 1959. He served as town clerk for a number of years. He married Rosadelle Quenemoen of Montevideo, Minnesota, on August 24, 1941. When the family moved to Trimont, Minnesota, in 1959, he worked for and later bought the Triumph State Bank and Insurance Agency. He was active with First Lutheran Church, Commercial Club, County Bankers Association and umpiring baseball and softball games. After selling the bank in 1981 to Jerry McGree and later selling the old grocery building, which had been rented out as the Boyd Post Office, he and Rose spent retirement between Trimont and a cabin on Lake Miitona. They moved to Minnetonka, Minnesota, in 1990, and in early 2002 he moved to the Wellstead Assisted Living Facility of Rogers, Minnesota, where he died of Alzheimers and pneumonia on December 22, 2002. He was preceded in death by his wife Rose in 1997; sisters Gena, Ellen, and Josephine; and brothers Dolven and Morris. Survivors are one brother Leonard (and Rachel) of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; three children: Jon, St. Paul, Minnesota, Janet (and Hal) Gensler, Zimmerman, Minnesota, and Mary (and Douglas) Moen, Minneapolis, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Justin and Taylor Moen; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
