Josie Delores
(Hovdesven) Haaland
June 8, 1914 – February 25, 1997
Josie Delores (Hovdesven) Haaland was born on June 8, 1914, to Albert and Amanda (Kise) Hovdesven in Lyon County, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Lucas Lutheran Church, Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, and was a lifetime member. Josie attended rural school District #56 in Lyon County and graduated from Cottonwood High School, Cottonwood, Minnesota, in 1930. She attended St. Cloud Teachers College and taught in rural schools in Lyon County and Yellow Medicine County for six years. On December 24, 1937, Josie was united in marriage to Jewell Haaland by Rev. H.J. Madland at the church parsonage. To this marriage, two children were born: Sheldon and Gary. Jewell and Josie farmed in Normania Township until 1971 when they moved to Clarkfield. Jewell passed away on February 25, 1997. Josie moved to Valhalla Apartments in 2002 and to the Clarkfield Care Center in 2005. Josie passed away on December 18, 2008, at the Clarkfield Care Center at the age of 94 years, 6 months and 10 days. Josie was active in St. Lucas Church activities, Normania Farmers Union, Clarkfield Auxiliary, Care Center Auxiliary, Clarkfield Garden Club and was a Prairie Five Volunteer. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, volunteering and being with her family. Josie is survived by her son, Sheldon (Marge) of Marshall, daughter-in-law Lori Haaland of Arden Hills, Minnesota; four grandchildren: Amy (Greg) Manning of Hanley Falls, Minnesota, Dustin (Kayte) Haaland of Hudson, Wisconsin, Allison Haaland of Fargo, North Dakota and Shari (Matt) Gibson of Shoreview, Minnesota; three great grandchildren: Cydney Jewel Manning, Gavin Vincent Manning, and Tyler John Gibson; and one sister: Inez Kompelien of Montevideo, Minnesota. She was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Amanda; her husband, Jewell; her son, Gary; her brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Eleanor Hovdesven; her sister and brother-in-law, Almira and Orley Miller; and brother-in-law, Thurman Kompelien.
