Joseph O. Fjerkenstad was born on October 14, 1914, in Lac qui Parle County, Boyd, Minnesota, to parents John and Olga (Grefsrud) Fjerkenstad. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boyd, Minnesota, and attended rural schools in District 55 of rural Boyd. Joe married Doris Marie Eggen on January 11, 1939. This union was blessed with two children: Madalynn and David. Joe and Doris farmed for over 50 years in the Boyd area. Joe remained on the farm following the death of his wife in November of 1996. He had to quit farming in the fall of 1998, due to his health, but his love of the farm and land was still very strong. He loved to read, especially farm magazines including 'Successful Farming' and 'The Farm Journal'. Joe passed away at the Johnson Memorial Hospital in Dawson, Minnesota, on Saturday afternoon, August 14, 1999, at the age of 84 years and 10 months. He is survived by his children and their families: Madalynn (and Roger) Hermanson of Clarkfield, Minnesota, and David (and Lynette) Fjerkenstad of Boyd. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Kari (and Jon) Olson, Keith Hermanson, and Nathan and Matthew Fjerkenstad; brothers: Melbourne (and Arlene) Fjerkenstad and Ernest (and Joyce) Fjerkenstad; and sisters Ruby (and Arnold) Wiegers, Ruth Hanson, and Arlene (and Virgil) Hegna. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Doris; brothers Palmer and Julian; and sister Margaret Lukken.
