Mr. John J. Varpness was born January 17, 1891, the son of John E. and Dena M. Varpness, on his parents farm near Cottonwood in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Lucas Lutheran Church where he was a member until he joined Augustana Lutheran Church. He served the Augustana congregation as custodian for many years. He passed away December 13, 1962, at the Clarkfield Nursing Home, at the age of 71 years. He had been a resident there for about two years. His immediate family members preceded him in death: his parents; his twin brother, Dithloff; three sisters: Cora, Amelia and Tina (Mrs. John Stensrud).
