John J. Stensrud was born January 18, 1882, in Lyon County, Minnesota, the son of Johannes and Mariet Stensrud. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith. His childhood years were spent on his father's farm in Lyon County. As a young man he operated his own farm for several years. On April 19, 1920, he was united in marriage to Thina Varpness. One child was born to this union. He lived on the farm until 1937 when he and his wife built the seven-mile corner grocery, located seven miles south of Clarkfield. John and Thina operated this country store for about 11 years. In 1948 they retired and moved to Clarkfield where John built a home in the southwest section of town. His wife died in 1949 and after a few years, John sold his home and moved to Granite Falls where he resided until about two months ago when he entered the Clarkfield Nursing Home. Mr. Stensrud passed away at the nursing home on Sunday, March 29, 1964, having reached the age of 82 years. His health had been failing for some years. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one child, four brothers and three sisters: Themon, Adenus, Aletta, Inger (Mrs. Lewis Martinson), Mathia (Mrs. Halvor Nelson), Oscar and Anton. He will be missed by several nephews and nieces, old friends and relatives.
