John Gerdes Solting was born in Jever, Germany, on April 21, 1900, to Johann and Marie (Muller) Solting. John attended school in Westrum, Germany, through the 8th grade. Following his serving in the German Army during World War I, he immigrated to the United States in 1923. On December 1, 1936, he married Ellen Marie Peterson in Madison, Minnesota. To this union, seven children were born: Marianne, Rosella, John, Alan, Ruby, Marlys and James Arthur who passed away in infancy in 1945. John served on the Trinity Lutheran Church Board of Trustees; he was a member of the Boyd Rod and Gun Club and the Boyd Senior Citizens. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, card playing, gardening and socializing with the many friends he had made through the years. He particularly enjoyed the time spent with his grandchildren. John leaves to mourn his passing: his sister, Frieda Jurgens of Waddewarden, Germany; his children and their families, Marianne and Dale Stevens, Huntsville, Alabama, Joan and Jeff; Rosella and Allen Hjelm, Englewood, Colorado, John, Paula and Kory Ann Hjelm, and Wes Hjelm; John and Sybil Solting, Mapleton, Minnesota, Johnna and Gretchen; Alan and Diane Solting, Montevideo, Minnesota, Amy and Jordan, Nicole and Nathan; Ruby and Roy Larson, Eagan, Minnesota, Michelle and Mike Dunford, Craig and Daniel Larson; and Marlys and Dennis Johnson, Lake City, Minnesota, Sheri and Brad; nieces and nephews; cousins; and a host of friends. Preceding John in death were his parents; his wife, Ellen Marie; and his son, James Arthur. Blessed be his memory.
