John Cornelius was born February 4, 1885, in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, the oldest son of Peder and Maren (Olson) Cornelius. He was baptized by Rev. O. Lokensgard and confirmed by Rev. H.O. Fjelstad in the Bergen Lutheran Church. He attended the Globe School of Business at Austin, Minnesota. He farmed most of his life in Lisbon township except for three years in North Dakota. June 18, 1912, he was united in marriage to Mary Amundson. To this union eight children were born: Chester, living with his mother, Ward of Montevideo, Minnesota, Mrs. Gerald (Janice) Kietzmann of Granite Falls, Minnesota, Mrs. Arden (Doris) Morland of Clarkfield, Mrs. Edward (Armenta) Frichtel, Alvin and Virgil of San Diego, California. One son, James, prededed him in death in 1971. He and his wife celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary last June. In 1970 he suffered a fractured hip and has been a resident of the Granite Manor for one year and the Clarkfield Care Center for the past four years. He died April 22, 1975, at the Clarkfield Hospital after a two-week illness. He was prededed in death by his parents; two sisters: Mrs. P.B. (Carolyn) Trelstad and Mrs. Henry (Tillie) Jacobsen; two brothers: Conrad and Oscar; one half brother, Peder; three half sisters: Mrs. Hans (Anna) Halvorson, Mrs. Anton (Carrie) Opsahl and Mrs. Throne (Ingaborg) Melbostad. He is survived by his wife and family; two sisters: Mrs. Andrew (Nicoline) Olien of Clarkfield, and Minnie Thompson of Montevideo; one brother, Elmer of New Effington, South Dakota; one half brother, Leonard who is 96 years old and living in Belle, California; 17 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
