John Carlson was born in Sweden, August 3, 1874, the son of Gustav and Ingri Lisa (Larson) Carlson. He was baptized in Sweden. He came with his parents to America in 1882 at the age of seven years. He was confirmed in Bernadotte, Minnesota. In 1892 the family moved to Renville, Minnesota, where they purchased a farm. On March 20, 1909, he married Caroline Christensen of Clarkfield, Minnesota. They lived on a farm south of Clarkfield for nine years before moving in 1919 to Manitoba, Canada. Here he purchased some land, but misfortune upon misfortune robbed him of all his possessions. Moving back to Clarkfield to start all over again, the Carlsons later bought the farm northwest of Clarkfield where he spent the remainder of his long life. He suffered a paralytic stroke August, 1952, from which he never fully recovered. On April 23, 1953, he was stricken by the illness which caused his death. He passed away at the Clarkfield Community Hospital at the age of 78 years.
