July 5, 1884 – January 13, 1950
John Conrad Aakvik was born July 5, 1884, in Stony Run Township, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota, the son of Bonsak and Maren (Mathison) Aakvik. He was baptized in Stony Run Church by Rev. Gulbrandson. As a boy his parents moved to the farm west of Clarkfield and joined the Clarkfield Norwegian Lutheran Church, where John was confirmed by Rev. O.C. Farseth on October 1, 1899. He had been a member of this church for over 50 years. As a boy he attended grade school in Tyro Township, the late Hellick Glaim being his teacher. John later attended Madison Normal School, and also Brookings, South Dakota College, from which he graduated in 1907. Later he attended Canton Academy. In January 1912, Mr. Aakvik was united in marriage to Miss Olga Mathilda Granholt, also of Tyro Township. They made their home with his parents until a few years later when they built up a fine farmstead adjoining the parental farm. To this union eight children were born, one daughter dying in infancy. His wife passed away May 23, 1923, leaving him with seven small children. Mr. Aakvik was town clerk in Tyro for over 30 years, serving faithfully and well, and was also treasurer for the Farmers Union Shipping Association at Clarkfield. He died Friday, January 13th, 1950, at the Montevideo Hospital, Montevideo, Minnesota, at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 8 days. Left to mourn Mr. Aakvik's death are the following sons and daughters: Melvin of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Judith (Mrs. Winfred Hanson) of Boyd, Minnesota, Evelyn (Mrs. Olaf Sorenson) of Clarkfield, Carl of Boyd, Minnesota, Myrtle (Mrs. Ray Booker) of Minneapolis, Arthur of Wolf Creek, Montana, and Bennie of Fargo, North Dakota; and one brother, Elmer Aakvik of Clarkfield; six grandsons and one granddaughter.
