Jim O. Tongen, son of Olaves and Aslavg (Jensen) Tongen, was born April 11, 1895, near Hazel Run in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed in the Hazel Run Lutheran Church. He married Inez Isaacs of the Hazel Run community on December 23, 1916. To this union five sons were born: Lucius of Clarkfield, Harlan of Hopkins, Minnesota, Willard of Excelsior, Minnesota, Omar of Hazel Run, and Jerald, killed in action in World War II. Jim farmed in the Hazel Run community most of his life. His health failed the past few weeks and he entered the Montevideo Hospital on July 20, 1964, where he submitted to surgery on July 22, 1964. His death came suddenly Friday, July 24, 1964. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jerald; and sister, Mrs. Charlie Mikelson. Surviving are his wife; four sons; 15 grandchildren; five brothers and three sisters: Amand (Mrs. John Tollefson) of Granite Falls, Ole Tongen of Walhalla, North Dakota, Sena (Mrs. Olaf Christianson) of Blomkest, Minnesota, August of Brownton, Minnesota, Herman of Echo, Minnesota, Alice (Mrs. Oscar Erie) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Elmer of Watson, Minnesota, and Walter of Milan, Minnesota.
