Obituary

Jerome Arthur Christensen, the son of George C. and Clara (Gullickson) Christensen, was born October 22, 1905, at the parental home six miles south and one and one-half west of Clarkfield. He was baptized November 30, 1905, by Rev. John Salhus of Hazel Run and confirmed by Rev. O.T. Storaasli on June 6, 1920, both events taking place at the Spring Creek Church of which he was a lifelong member. He attended school in District 23 and was graduated from the Clarkfield High School in 1924. He also attended St. Cloud State College and taught rural school before going into farming which became his life occupation. He never married. He had been a diabetic for 34 years but continued to occupy his farm home until January 7, 1964, when he became too disabled to care for himself. From then to the present, he had lived with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Owen Anderson of rural Belview, Minnesota, and also spending some time with his younger sister, Mrs. Randolph Jolstad of rural Franklin, Minnesota. During his last illness, he entered the Clarkfield Hospital on September 4, 1968, where he passed away on November 15, 1968. He was 63 years old. Preceding him in death were his mother, Clara, on May 12, 1931, at the age of 55 years; his father, George, on March 20, 1945, at the age of 73 years, and his only brother, Kenneth, on October 24, 1948, at the age of 45 years. He is survived by his two sisters: Isabel (Mrs. Owen C. Anderson) and Hilda (Mrs. Randolph Jolstad); two nephews: Kaye Christensen of Hazel Run and Dr. Douglas Jolstad of Hopkins; four nieces: Mrs. Perry Banks of Lynd, Minnesota, Mrs. John Nelson of Crawfordsville, Indiana, Miss Dawn Anderson and Mrs. Peter Bissell of New Brighton, Minnesota; four great nephews and two great nieces. Jerome's maternal grandparents, Halvor and Christina Gullickson were the first pioneer settlers in Normania Township, arriving at Spilleman Lake on October 12, 1867. He was the last descendant of that family to reside in the township. His paternal grandparents, Hans and Ingeborg Christensen homsteaded in the same township in section 8 in 1871. Both of his parents were born in Normania.
