Obituary

Jennie Inez Meininger, the widow of Hiram C. Meininger, 42 years a depot agent in Clarkfield, passed away on Christmas eve and was laid to rest beside "Hi" at the Hazel Run Cemetery on Thursday afternoon, December 28, 1972, following the services at the Clarkfield United Methodist Church. "Inie" had worked with her husband during those years when everything and everybody arrived and went by train. Two night trains and two day trains were the daily schedule, and the depot agent was responsible for the maintenance crews, dispatching and train schedules and seeing that people were taken care of upon leaving and returning. Inez came with her family from Rio, Wisconsin, where she was born on September 26, 1885. The family made its first home east of Hazel Run in a log cabin. She was the fifth in the family of eight children of James and Clara (Isaakson) Jertson. The father came from Norway and the mother was a native of Ruthton, Wisconsin. The mother and the children operated the land while the father was busily engaged in carpenter work as a contractor. He built many of the churches, business buildings and homes in the area. Inez finished school at Hazel Run and then clerked in the store there at Rio, before her marriage. When the Meiningers first came to Clarkfield, they resided in the current Oscar Melbostad home by the depot. Later, in 1913, they purchased their home, now owned by Jane Mauland, from the Alfred Olsons when they moved across the street to the home they occupied many years. Only two homes were east of their home at the time. The Meiningers had one daughter, Gail, who was the wife of Captain Leigh Werring, who lost his life following his service during World War II in the South Pacific. She now serves at Brookside Manor in Montevideo. Mrs. Meininger was active as a member of the Clarkfield United Methodist Church, its Women's Society and Adult class. She was a loyal Eastern Star. In spite of her arthritic condition which was a severe handicap, she enjoyed flowers, often sharing the blossoms with many friends, and the family traveled extensively during yearly vacations, visiting every state in the union, in the early years by train and later by car. She is survived by her daughter, Gail; two sisters: Mrs. Mabel Schomberg and Mrs. Irene DeMerssemen, both of Granite Falls. Along with her husband, Hiram, who passed away in 1959, and her parents, she was preceded in death by the following sisters and brothers: Mathilda (Mrs. Levi Hanson) of Rio, Wisconsin, Herman and George of the Hazel Run area, Walter of North Dakota, and Iva. Some still remember the excitement of the arrival and departure of trains and how the community turned out to meet them. Today there are no mail or passenger trains. The occasional train whistle is for shipments from the local A.M.P.I. plant, or the shipment of soybeans from the Dawson mills or grain shipments from the elevators. Today travel is all car, plane, snowmobile -- the changing times. Arrangements by Lynner Funeral Home Since 1891 Clarkfield, Minnesota
