Jay Stanley Smolley was born in Clarkfield, Minnesota, on December 18, 1911, to Andrew and Annie Smolley. He was baptized and confirmed at Clarkfield Norwegian Lutheran Church. Upon graduation from Clarkfield High School, he attended Concordia College and graduated from Dunwoody Industrial Institute in 1939. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy on December 8, 1941, and served as a first class pharmacist's mate in Trinidad, British Guyana and Key West, Florida until his discharge in 1945. He was joined in marriage to Mary Margaret Brock on April 24, 1943, at the Methodist Church in Key West, Florida. In 1945 they moved to Clarkfield, Minnesota, and became active in farming. Jay was actively involved in the Clarkfield Community, serving as president of the local school board, president of Clarkfield Lutheran Church, a member of the Church Building Committee and in recent years an active member of the Lion's Club and Hazel Run American Legion. Jay passed away at Clarkfield Community Hospital on November 17, 1982, following a sudden heart attack. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Marie of West Des Moines, Iowa; sons David Warren and John Michael of Minneapolis, Minnesota; son-in-law Dale L. Fuhrman; daughters-in-law, Bernice and Cynthia; four grandchildren: Daniel Jay and Nicole Suzann Fuhrman, Samuel Jay Winston Smolley and Jennifer Anne Smolley; brothers: Abner of Clarkfield and Donald of Park Rapids, Minnesota; sisters: Evelyn Brock of Clarkfield, Lillian Palmgren of Madison, Minnesota, and Norma Jacobson of Hanley Falls, Minnesota; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceding him in death were his loving wife Margaret, his parents, one brother and one sister.
