March 18, 1889 – April 9, 1974
Funeral services for Mrs. George M. Gehant were held on Saturday afternoon, April 13, 1974, at the Clarkfield United Methodist Church with Pastors James Thomson and Harris Halstad officiating. Mrs. Harry Edmunds served as organist with special music by Mrs. Ward Gehant and Bradley Gough. Honorary Casket Bearers were Lester Benson, Harry Edmunds, Paul Frazuer, Volney Peterson, James Stroup and Alonzo Wharton. Serving as Casket Bearers were grandchildren: David Gehant, William Gough, James Gehant, Ward Bruce Gehant, George Gehant III, and David Hoffman. Burial was at the Clarkfield City Cemetery. Janette Florence Gebhardt Gehant was born March 18, 1889, at Adell, Illinois, the second in the family of eight children of Theodore Henry and Margaret (Bruce) Gebhardt. Following high school graduation, she taught school several years in Illinois before her marriage on June 12, 1917, to George M. Gehant at Sterling, Illinois. Shortly after their marriage, the Gehants moved to the farm north of Canby, Minnesota, where they resided until August of 1934 when they moved to Clarkfield and resided to the present. Mrs. Gehant was an active worker in her churches, the Antelope Hills Church of Christ, north of Canby, and the United Methodist Church in Clarkfield where she served as pianist, Sunday School teacher, president of the aid and financial secretary. She was a past president of the WCTU, the Clarkfield Garden Club and the Clarkfield Study Club. She was a Past Matron of the Clarkfield Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star and was active in many of the 4-H Club and extension programs of the county. She led a full life until ten weeks ago, when she took ill and passed away on April 9, 1974, at the Clarkfield Care Center at the age of 85. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and two grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her husband, George; her four children: Alice Lucille (Mrs. Bradley Gough) of Media, Pennsylvania, George Modeste, Jr. of Madison, Minnesota, Ward Bruce of Hopkins, Minnesota, and Margaret Mae (Mrs. Duane Hoffman) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; one brother, Theodore of Chicago, Illinois; 16 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a host of friends.
