Janet Marie (Grimes) Johnson was born on December 7, 1944, to parents Oscar and Minnie Grimes. She, her parents, and younger sister, Joan, lived on a farm near Grove Lake, Minnesota. Janet went to elementary school in a one room school house and later graduated from Glenwood High School, Glenwood, Minnesota Janet and Cliff Johnson were married on January 25, 1964. They made their home in Clarkfield, Minnesota, with three children: Diane, Kenny, and Steven. Janet loved her family dearly and loved being a mom. She created an environment in which everyone who came into her home felt like a part of the family. In 1973, Janet and Cliff purchased the Clarkfield Bakery. They developed a flourishing business which became widely renowned for its delicious treats. Janet found great joy in making people happy with her handmade creations. Janet began working at the Clarkfield Care Center in 1992. She was a compassionate care giver and developed special relationships with both residents and staff. She was continually busy cooking, baking, reading, knitting or doing hardanger. She loved the sun, walking, being outdoors and working in her garden. She enjoyed shopping and having lunch with her friend, Teri, and daughter, Diane. Janet took several special trips to Northern Minnesota, where they enjoyed tranquill moments observing nature and being together. Janet passed away on New Year's Day, 2000, at the McKennan Hospice Unit in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, following a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband, Cliff, of Clarkfield and her children: Diane of Somerset, Wisconsin, Ken of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Steven and daughter-in-law, Michelle of Sioux City, Iowa; and her dog 'Pepper'; and extended family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister. Janet was an extraordinary woman. She was a nuturing mother and wife, a caring and giving friend, and a compassionate human being. Janet will be greatly missed but precious memories of her will live on.
