Obituary

Iver Arneson, long time cafe operator in Clarkfield, passed away at the Minnesota Masonic Home in Minneapolis on Friday, June 9, 1972. He had been in the Home's Care Center for some time. Iver Andrew Arneson, son of Arne Iverson and Johanna (Olson) Iverson was born December 22, 1876, in Norway. He came to America in 1885, at the age of nine years, with his parents and two sisters, Oleanna and Johanna. The family homesteaded in south Clarkfield. Iver was brought up and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He grew to manhood in Clarkfield and was the first newspaper assistant here from 1894 to 1897. He spent two years working in the post office during Cleveland's last administration. He next went to Echo, Minnesota, where he worked for seven years in the store of Charles Chapman, and where he met his life partner, Stella, the daughter of Charles and Mary (McCormick) Chapman. The two were married on November 25, 1903, by the Rev. Searles in Echo. When the store in Echo was sold, they moved to Abercrombie, North Dakota, where they operated a confectionary business and hotel for nine years. In 1915, Iver and Stella started the restaurant business here in Clarkfield and continued until 1945 when they retired and purchased a home in northeast Clarkfield. His wife, Stella, passed away on January 7, 1964. In 1965, Iver left his home in Clarkfield to take up residence at the Minnesota Masonic Home in Bloomington, Minnesota. He passed away on June 9, 1972, at 7:30 a.m., at the age of 95 years. Iver was in good health, mentally alert and enjoyed life until just prior to his death. He had a smile and a song for everyone associated with him. Iver and Stella were blessed with two children: Lyle of Minneapolis, and Dorothy (Mrs. Henry Afdem) of Minneota, Minnesota. Besides his children, he is survived by six grandchildren: Mrs. Larry Rafnson of Lakeville, Minnesota, Mrs. James Waggoner of Marshall, Minnesota, Mrs. Paul Swedzinski and David Afdem of Minneota, Roxanne Arneson of Minneapolis, and Richard Arneson of Mankato, Minnesota. He also leaves five great grandchildren and three sisters: Miss Annie Iverson and Mrs. Josephine LeGros, both of the Minnesota Masonic Home and Mrs. Nettie Love of Clarkfield. Iver was preceded in death by his wife, Stella; his parents; one brother, Ole; four sisters: Josie in infancy, Oleanna, Johanna and Mabel; and one grandchild, John Dennis Afdem.
